Some New Year’s “Words of Wisdom”
January 3, 2008
So many platitudes – the temptation is to put out some trite (albeit true) sayings and let them become “words of wisdom” for New Year’s – but I’m going to resist and keep it simple…
There are some wonderful rules of life that I think are worth remembering at this time of year. Here are some of my favorites, taken from a variety of “Life Lists”:
Don’t be afraid of your passion
Honor your aspirations
Cherish your dreams
It doesn’t matter who started it (taken from Things we can learn from Children)
Ask “why” until you understand (“)
It’s more fun to color outside the lines (“)
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm (taken from Things we can learn from Dogs)
Thrive on attention and let people touch you (“)
Never pretend to be something you’re not (“)
Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory (“)
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them (“)
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it (“)
I’m going to try to remember these simple gems, and hope you find value in them, too!

Hi Jackie,
I love these ‘Words of Wisdom’ for the new year. They make so much sense and you’ve inspired me! Thank you.
I really liked ‘eat with gusto and enthusiasm’ and it reminds me of a Today Show segment I saw this morning about the hidden calories in drinks. I could NOT believe how many calories are in my favorite alcoholic and coffee drinks! Yikes! I had no idea. Some of them were more than a regular meal!
Anyhow, do you have any advice on watching those high calorie drinks?
Many thanks and happy New Year!

Hi there and thanks for your query!
Even though you have a robust appetite and can “hold your own” when you belly-up to the bar, excess calories that have no nutritional value are not good for anyone. Besides the calories in alcohol, drinking too much also inspires you to consume more later, as it lowers your inhibition, since you end up feeling like you can eat anything and everything you see.
It pays to know what’s in your favorite beverage, for sure. I recommend finding out whether you’re dealing with fruit juice (which is fine) or high fructose corn syrup-based drinks (which is not fine). When in doubt, select the simplier option – like vodka and fruit juice (as in a Screwdriver) or even better, red wine.
I give my clients at my personal catering company, NutriFit, my self- designed, wonderful non-alcoholic beverages that you might enjoy – virgin margaritas, pina coladas, cranberry cider punch, and my own nutriccino (healthy version of the frappucino). Here are the recipes for you:
Virgin Margarita
1. Combine 1/2 a (12 oz.) can of nonalcoholic beer, a full 12 oz. can of frozen limeade concentrate, and 2 cups of crushed iced in a 40 to 48 oz. capacity blender.
2. Blend until frothy, then slowly add in the remainder of the beer. Serve at once, garnish each glass with a lime wedge, if desired.
If you wish to make salt rimmed glasses, rub the rim of each glass with a cut lime. Then dip the glass into a plate of coarse salt and refrigerate the glass until ready to use.
Serves 8.
Virgin Pina Coladas
1. In a blender, combine 2 cups of pineapple juice, 1/8 teaspoon of coconut extract, ½ cup lite coconut milk, ½ cup fat free half and half until smooth. Serve immediately.
Serves 3.
Cranberry Cider Punch
1. In a small saucepan, infuse 1 cup of fruit flavored herbal tea (brewed) with four allspice berries, one tablespoon of orange rind and 4 whole cloves for 15 minutes. Let cool and strain.
2. Combine 1 cup cranberry juice, 3 cups of apple cider, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 33 oz. of diet lemon-lime or cherry lemon-lime last. Serve over ice.
Nutriccino
1. Combine 6 oz. Italian roast coffee, 1 teaspoon of Hershey’s Cocoa, 1 teaspoon of pectin, 2 tablespoons of sugar free vanilla syrup, 3 tablespoons of low fat sweetened condensed milk and 1 cup of ice cubes into a blender and blend until smooth.
2. Serve immediately.
Best of health to you!
